The main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP) is planning to submit a bill to restrict the prime minister's ability to arbitrarily dissolve the Lower House, the all-important lower chamber of parliament, for a snap general election.

The CDP, which is hoping to submit the bill to an extraordinary of parliament as soon as this autumn, is considering several proposals.

One would require the Cabinet to notify the Lower House in advance of the dissolution date and the reason for dissolving the chamber. Another being discussed would require parliamentary deliberations on the dissolution if requested by at least a quarter of Lower House members.
