Some Chinese students in Japan have been blackmailed by fraudsters posing as Chinese authorities into staging their own kidnapping to elicit ransom from their relatives in China, sources say.
Believing that a Chinese fraud group is behind the fake kidnapping scams, Tokyo's Metropolitan Police Department is increasing vigilance while cooperating with the Chinese Embassy in Tokyo and other authorities.
On June 28, a Japanese-language school in Tokyo reported to the MPD that a female Chinese student had been abducted by someone and that her parents in China had received a ransom demand.
