East Japan Railway Co. said Thursday it has resolved a computer malfunction that caused all electronic signboards for shinkansen bullet trains to shut down the previous day, causing confusion for travelers during the Golden Week holiday period.

The firm, better known as JR East, said the signboards correctly displayed the schedules starting with the first train on Thursday. That was the day when the rail company expected to see peak numbers of people who returned to their hometowns for the Golden Week holiday break ride shinkansen trains back to Tokyo and other major cities.

On Wednesday, electronic signboards installed at all stations along the Tohoku, Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen Lines failed to show any information — including the trains' departure times and destinations — all day.
