Tomy Co. may reduce production in China because of safety concerns.

The Tokyo-based toy maker and distributor may increase production in Vietnam and Thailand, spokeswoman Shigemi Sugaya said Thursday.

The company, which gets about 90 percent of its products from China, will reduce that ratio to as low as 40 percent over the next three years, the Sankei Shimbun reported, citing an unidentified company executive.

Mattel Inc., the world's largest toy maker, and other companies have recalled millions of items made in China this year because of design flaws or paint with too much lead. Tomy in August recalled Sarge car toys made by Mattel.

Tomy, which makes Transformers and Thomas the Tank Engine toys, will maintain some production facilities in China as it is a potentially lucrative market, the paper said.
