A man was arrested Friday in connection with the slaying of his mother, whose body was found in her apartment in Kiyose, Tokyo, police said.

Hirofumi Ichikawa, 45, has admitted killing his 69-year-old mother, Masako, police said, adding they found the corpse Thursday.

"I killed my mother. I hid the body in a closet but later put it under the floor," Ichikawa was quoted as saying.

He said he killed his mother because she had complained about his debts, police said.

Ichikawa, who lives in a different building from his mother in the same apartment complex, is suspected of putting her body in a plastic bag sometime between July 14 and Aug. 3 and hiding it under the floor of her apartment.

Ichikawa had driven off Thursday morning with his two daughters -- a high school junior and a sixth grader, police said.

Saitama Prefectural Police found his car in Gyoda, Saitama Prefecture, Thursday night, and held him and his two daughters.

He was quoted as saying: "I told my daughters we should go for a drive. We were heading to Gunma Prefecture."

The daughters were apparently unaware of the slaying, according to police.
