Visiting Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi agreed Friday to further promote economic and technological exchanges between the two countries.

During a meeting, Koizumi thanked Aliyev for Azerbaijan's support of Japan's bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, according to a Foreign Ministry official who briefed reporters.

Aliyev, for his part, expressed hope for additional economic cooperation and investment by Japan in his country, particularly those related to nonoil-related industries over a long term, the official said.

Azerbaijan has recently enjoyed rapid economic growth thanks to its rich oil resources. The country is inviting Japanese companies to invest in social infrastructure and operate those facilities as well, the president was quoted as saying.
