Prince Tomohito of Mikasa, a cousin of Emperor Akihito, underwent surgery Tuesday to remove a cancerous growth from his throat, the Imperial Household Agency said.

Satoshi Ebihara, honorary director of the National Cancer Center Hospital East, performed the 2 1/2-hour operation at Kyorin University Hospital in western Tokyo.

The 60-year-old prince was diagnosed with an early stage of throat cancer after a regular checkup Feb. 7.

It was his seventh operation for cancer. In the past, he has had tumors removed from his esophagus, tongue and throat.
