Victor Co. of Japan said Saturday it will shut down a plant for cathode-ray tube television components in Oyama, Tochigi Prefecture, at the end of this month.

The closure is in response to slack domestic demand for CRT TV components amid the growing popularity of flat-screen TVs.

The Oyama plant has already ended production, Victor said, and its functions will be transferred to a plant in China.

Victor will shift 30 percent of about 270 employees at the Oyama plant to another factory in Yamato, Kanagawa Prefecture. The rest will be laid off.
