A man was found dead Tuesday morning in his apartment in Ota Ward, Tokyo, and police are investigating the case as a murder, officials said.

The 71-year-old mother of Takashi Nakano, 36, called police at around 8:40 a.m. to say she had found her dead son lying in a pool of blood on his kitchen floor, police officials said.

Police found more than a dozen knife wounds on Nakano's face and neck. Investigators suspect he died from excessive loss of blood and had been dead for three to four days.

Nakano, who worked part-time as a cleaner at a nearby temple, lived alone. His mother, who lives in the neighborhood, went to his apartment because she had been unable to contact him for more than a week.

There were no signs of a struggle, and police are talking to people who knew Nakano to see if he had been involved in any trouble, the officials said.

According to the temple, Nakano went to work last Thursday but failed to show up the following day.
