Hitachi Ltd. said Wednesday it chalked up a group net profit of 2.52 billion yen in the October-December quarter, marking a turnaround from a loss of 2.26 billion yen posted a year ago.

The figure was lifted by surging revenue in the firm's information and communications business.

The high-tech giant said its group sales grew 6.6 percent to 2.05 trillion yen.

The core information and communications segment contributed most to the quarter's strong results, with its operating profit posting a 7.4-fold jump to 13.41 billion yen.

Sales in the segment grew 26 percent to 514.60 billion yen, Hitachi said.

The hard-disk drive business bought by the company from International Business Machines Corp. boosted the profit increase in the segment, with the Hitachi group having overhauled its business portfolios under a midterm management program.
