Sony Corp. and NEC Corp. will hire about 30 percent fewer new graduates next spring than they did this spring, company officials said Friday.

The move is intended to cut labor costs as Japanese electronics companies make their way toward an earnings recovery, they said.

Other electronics companies, including Fujitsu Ltd., may follow suit, industry analysts said.

Sony will hire about 300 new graduates next spring, compared with about 500 each year over the past three years, a Sony official said.

NEC intends to hire about 500 new graduates next spring, down by 250 from this year, an NEC official said, adding that NEC might take on more midcareer workers if necessary.
