The second film in the Harry Potter series drew some 1.6 million moviegoers and grossed 2.05 billion yen in its opening weekend in Japan, Warner Bros. Pictures, distributor of "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," said Monday.

Both figures constitute record highs, the firm said.

In terms of viewers, the previous two-day record was held by the first Harry Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," which drew roughly 1.39 million moviegoers. In terms of revenues, "Star Wars: Episode 2" held the previous record, at around 1.6 billion yen.

The Harry Potter films are based on the best-selling novels by British author J.K. Rowling.
