With high-speed wireless Internet connection points springing up at retail businesses in Tokyo and other cities, Kazuhiko Sekimoto has become one of many a mobile Internet surfers.

On a recent weekday afternoon, the 33-year-old computer system engineer stopped by at a McDonald's restaurant at Sunshine City in Tokyo's Ikebukuro district and hooked up to the wireless local area network over a burger and fries.

"At first, I was puzzled over how to access the Internet in a place like this," Sekimoto said. "But once I got through, it's fast enough to surf the Internet and receive business-related e-mails that are loaded with a massive volume of attached files."
