The Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and three other groups representing small and midsize firms rallied Thursday against government moves to launch a corporate tax based on criteria other than profits.

Some 1,100 people from the four groups, mostly managers of small companies, assembled at a Tokyo hotel and adopted a resolution against the so-called pro forma standard tax, saying it would raise their tax burden and further damage finances. Some Diet members opposed to the tax also attended the gathering.

The three other associations are the Central Federation of Societies of Commerce and Industry, the National Federation of Small Business Associations, and the National Federation of Shopping Center Promotion Associations.
