The ruling Liberal Democratic Party may decide not to field candidates in some Lower House constituencies and instead support members of its two coalition partners at these electoral districts, senior LDP sources said Sunday.

The LDP is contemplating such concessions as an alternative to fundamental reform of the current electoral system for the House of Representatives demanded by New Komeito, the larger of the party's two partners, the sources said.

Under the current system introduced in 1994, 480 members of the Lower House are elected from 300 single-seat constituencies nationwide and regional proportional representation blocs.
