OSAKA -- A woman is suspected of fatally stabbing her 4-year-old daughter in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, before jumping to her death from a housing complex in an apparent suicide Monday, police said.

They said Maki Morita, 31, was found dead on the grounds of the housing complex near her parents' house, where her mother, Misako, 55, found her granddaughter, Kyoka, dead on a futon on the second floor at around 9:25 a.m.

The grandmother also found a kitchen knife that was apparently used to kill the child beside a pillow, police said.

Morita had returned to her parents' home with Kyoka following a divorce, which had troubled her, according to the police.

They said Misako was on the second floor sleeping with her daughter and granddaughter before she woke up around 7:30 a.m. She went upstairs to check on her granddaughter about two hours later and found her dead.
