Japan and the United States will discuss ways to better cope with the rapidly increasing foreign direct investment in Japan by cosponsoring a government-private sector symposium March 1 in Tokyo, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry announced Thursday. The symposium will focus on mergers and acquisitions in Japan and foreign affiliated firms' strategies on human resources and management in investment. Participants will include trade chief Takashi Fukaya, U.S. Ambassador Thomas Foley and Noboru Hatakeyama, chairman of the Japan External Trade Organization. The results of the symposium will be reflected in discussions of the Working Group on Investment and Buyer-Supplier Relationships under the Framework for a Japan-U.S. New Economic Partnership. The talks were launched in 1993 by President Bill Clinton and then Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa.
