The Tokyo High Court on Friday upheld a lower court decision rejecting demands by 156 residents living near the Atsugi Naval Air Facility in Kanagawa Prefecture to halt flights from the base between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.

Regarding their demands for compensation for the noise endured, the court reaffirmed the lower court order that the central government pay redress, but upped the amount to 170.2 million yen from the lower court-imposed 110 million yen to cover the period between the two rulings.

The plaintiffs, the second group of residents to sue the state, originally demanded 970 million yen when they filed their action in 1984, but later reduced the demand to 702 million yen.
