OSAKA -- West Japan Railway Co. has set up an internal research team to review the process of inspecting and repairing tunnels after the discovery of over 2,000 faulty points in Sanyo Shinkansen Line tunnels, it was learned Wednesday.
An inspection of the 142 tunnels, totaling 280 km, between Osaka and Hakata, Fukuoka Prefecture, revealed 2,049 points where the concrete was not sufficiently secure, company officials said Tuesday.
The probe came after accidents involving falling chunks of concrete were reported along the Sanyo Shinkansen track June 27 and on Monday.
