(Nov. 12)

Translation

Japan’s first domestically produced passenger jet made its first test flight on Nov. 11, half a century after the country last introduced a new passenger plane. The Mitsubishi Regional Jet, developed by Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp., successfully completed a 1½-hour return flight from Nagoya Airport in Aichi Prefecture. The 35-meter-long twin-engine aircraft will have 70 to 90 seats, and its slim body design reduces air resistance, helping it consume around 20 percent less fuel than other aircraft of similar size. The jetliner has a maximum range of around 3,800 km, allowing it to fly routes such as Tokyo to Taipei or Shanghai. The MRJ is expected to face competition from rivals such as Brazil’s Embraer SA and Canada’s Bombardier Inc. The company has so far won a total of 407 orders from six airlines.
