(Nov. 9)

Global warming could elevate disease, ravage crops and push 100 million more people into poverty unless action is taken to prevent it, the World Bank announced in a new report Nov. 8. The problem of climate change is already hampering efforts to reduce poverty, the bank said, and the poorest people are already suffering more than others from lower rainfall and extreme weather tied to warming. The report pointed out that the world's poor people are woefully unprepared to deal with climate shocks such as rising seas or severe droughts. "They have fewer resources and receive less support from family, community, the financial system and even social safety nets to prevent, cope and adapt," it said.
