Born in Japan and now based in Shanghai and Paris, Michael Lin is a globally known artist whose work is strongly inspired by textiles. His installations are often large-scale, involving painting architectural spaces with brightly colored motifs similar to those of fabrics.
For this exhibition, which takes place in Towada Art Center's cafe area, he has chosen "Mingling Space," a rough translation of "Fureai Hall," as a concept, referring to the central shopping area of Towada, an area he found particularly interesting during his stay in the city.
Works on show include patchwork creations, made in collaboration with the people of Towada. Patchworking has a history of being a sociable pastime, and by working with locals, Lin aimed to make this show's artworks a community creation — a project that involved the "mingling" of people; May 28-Aug. 28.
