Launched in 2004 with the backing of New York drum 'n' bass record label and store Breakbeat Science and art/fashion collective Surface to Air, BBS ( www.bbstokyo.com ) is a retail space for art, fashion and music located on Harajuku's famed Cat Street. Titled "10 x 10," the latest exhibition brings together leading players on Japan's street-art scene, including stencil specialist Aiko Nagawa (aka FAILE), cartoon monster artist Ogi, and Yoshinori Sakamaki (aka Sense), all of whom have produced 10 works on 18 cm x 14 cm canvases. Each of the miniature paintings is priced at 10,000 yen -- hence the title. Those keen on acquiring some of this unusually affordable art should hurry down to Harajuku as the majority of the works were snapped up at the private viewing Feb. 17. Besides the inevitable murals for hair salons, cafes and stores, many of these artists have ended up creating products in conjunction with apparel firms: Nagawa has been co-opted by Comme des Garcons, while Sakamaki has designed a watch for Casio and Ogi has produced sneakers for DC Shoe Co -- all good ways to make a modest living.
