A veritable mint of prints

Some 222 Japanese prints ranging in style from the traditional to the abstract will feature in the 46th College Women's Association of Japan Print Show at the Tokyo American Club in Azabudai, Minato Ward, from Oct. 19-21.

Soaking up history

In a quiet residential area of Tokyo's Bunkyo Ward, half hidden by a large maple tree, stands an impressive, castlelike wooden structure that is like a portal to another time. With old-fashioned kawara tiles on its pagoda-style roof, and its curliculed surrounding stone wall, the building is evocative of an era when yukata and geta were common and people called places like this home.

Two takes on what's really happening

Shiseido Gallery in Tokyo's Ginza and Art Tower Mito in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, will simultaneously present exhibitions of contemporary art from East Asia by up-and-coming artists, starting Friday. Asian contemporary art has captivated many people over the past decade. Masaki Higuchi from Shiseido Gallery and Toshihiro Asai from Art Tower Mito are no exception. They traveled around Beijing, Seoul, Taipei and Tokyo, wandering streets and galleries and drinking in the atmosphere. Their impressions of Asian contemporary art have yielded two exhibitions with quite different themes, "After Kitsch" at Shiseido Gallery, and "Cute" at Art Tower Mito.
