Identity quests unite labels
Maybe the abundance of "safe" fashion on the runways at the 2010 Autumn/Winter Japan Fashion Week in Tokyo last month was the designers' way of spinning themselves a taffeta and jersey-cotton cocoon from which they hope to emerge next season with their businesses and egos left intact.

Variations on Dynamite Cabarets, Tiger, togas, Yohji Yamamoto and Comme des Garcons
Aki and Kuzu get smart Cabaret Aki and Jackal Kuzu are known as the designers of scandalously flagrant men's brand Gut's Dynamite Cabarets, but with the launch of their impressive new line, JhonAG, their alter-egos may soon fade as the two are set to be reverently known as just Aki and Kuzu.

Fashion Rio and the casual lifestyle
A teensy-weensy, zebra-striped, strapless bikini was just one of the many sexy little numbers worn by Brazilian beauties as they energetically bounced — one step short of a samba — down the catwalks of Fashion Rio in Rio de Janeiro last month.

Fragrant fashions, high-brow specs, Vogue in 3-D, and Tokyo's own
Getting intimate Tucked in the residential boroughs of Tokyo's Aobadai district in Meguro is a new intimate shop, Lilid 05, where the uplifting scent of fashion wafts you through its unassuming doors. The store opened at the end of April, but the Lilid 05 brand itself is also fairly new, only now in its second season. The label's concept is based on perfume, or the idea that a certain scent can become associated with a woman, much like styles of fashion do (hence the name's nudge at Chanel 5).

Fashion up from Down Under
When Myf Shepherd, the next "It girl" model, stepped out onto the runway at Rosemount Australia Fashion Week in a slinky jumper, it wasn't only camera flashes that lit up the room — so did the glow of computer screens and handhelds. Not only did pens record notes like lightning on paper — keyboards and Blackberrys followed digital suit. A conspicuously mixed group of fashion editors and bloggers, the Vogues next to the Tweeters, were all treated as VIPs and asked to share the same golden front row that is usually reserved for the purveyors of print.

Say hello to Belgium's best, aptform, the Land of Tomorrow and Forever 21
Bold Belgium "Avant garde" doesn't even begin to describe some of the amazing creations that have come from the Belgian fashion capital of Antwerp over the years. Intelligent designers from the city successfully fuse fantasy with reality, and the "6+ Antwerp" exhibition at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery till June 28 celebrates such Belgian creators by presenting nearly 60 of their designs.

Tokyo hots up for autumn / winter '09
The length of a fashion show averages about 10 minutes, a short span during which design prodigies can be born while others fail, dragging small fortunes into fashion oblivion with them.
