Infield replacements making presence felt
Friday marked the 75th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's "Luckiest Man" speech delivered at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939. Strange that one so sick at the age of 37 is known as a baseball iron man who played while healthy in 2,130 consecutive games, and that streak began when Gehrig was inserted in the New York lineup on June 2, 1925, because the Yanks' regular first baseman was not feeling well.

Godfather of J-horror escapes from genre's grip
Hideo Nakata could be called the godfather of contemporary Japanese horror, but he would probably hate the label. Regardless, this 52-year-old director of such genre classics as "Ring," "Ring 2" and "Honogurai Mizu no Soko kara (Dark Water)" has made J-horror — a combination of present-day settings and technology (the death-dealing video tapes in "Ring") and age-old lore about vengeful spirits — into a global brand.

Twice as nice: 'The Full Monty' and Peeping Tom
"I love the original 'Full Monty' movie, and I think Robert Carlyle is brilliant as the central character — a loser who overcomes the odds against him. In fact it's his portrayal that inspired me to tackle the role as my live-acting debut — though now I regret agreeing to it because on stage there's nowhere to hide (laughs)."

Autumn admissions
Cherry blossoms have long accompanied the start of the school year in Japan, but that may soon change to autumn leaves. The University of Tokyo is looking into the possibility of beginning its school year in the fall rather than spring. If adopted, the change, which would likely be followed by other universities, would put Japan in line with the rest of the world in a practical and sensible way.

Are the fishing fools running out of line?
Tsuri Baka Nisshi 12 Rating: * * 1/2 Director: Katsuhide Motoki Running time: 111 minutes Language: JapaneseOpens Aug. 18 Some sequels make sense, but a "3" or "4" after the title of a Hollywood movie is generally a good reason to stay away unless you happen to be feeling charitable toward a studio with an empty idea bank. I am not alone in thinking so -- few Hollywood franchises make it to "5," let alone "25."
