As Geki×Cine raises its game, Amami goes into battle for her man
Geki×Cine isn't really film and it isn't theater, but rather an intriguing blend of the two. With geki meaning "stage," and "cine" representing film, the finished productions are shown on the big screen. So are they stage-to-screen adaptations? Most certainly not. More accurately, they are stage plays or musicals on film, shot with cameras coming in so close to the performers you can see the sweat running off their cheeks.

Takarazuka double-bill special marks the end of a Star star's era
The 101-year-old all-female Takarazuka Revue company is currently staging a double bill of "Like a Black Panther" and "Dear Diamond!!" at its Takarazuka Grand Theater in the city of Takarazuka, Hyogo Prefecture, prior to a long Tokyo run from late March that will see its top star, Reon Yuzuki, take her final bow after 16 years' service.

A revue of Japan's femininity
Ichizo Kobayashi (1873-1957) was the founder of the West Japan Hankyu train line and department store in Osaka's central Umeda district. Arguably his most significant artistic contribution was the establishment of the Takarazuka Music School in 1913, which combined a modern education with the training of young girls in stage performance embodied by the Takarazuka motto of "modesty, fairness and grace."
