Bizarre ideology of fringe Republican convention
Gene Wisdom, a 55-year-old conservative from Nashville, Tennessee, was no fan of Barack Obama. Clutching a book called "The Communist," he was waiting eagerly to meet the book's author, Paul Kengor, so that he could sign it. The book, which detailed the life of black American journalist and labor activist Frank Marshall Davis, bore a startling subtitle: "The untold story of Barack Obama's mentor." That worked for Wisdom. "It is very convincing," he said.

Republican divide deepens at conservative gathering
If there was any doubt that there is a huge amount of discord within the Republican Party, the three-day Conservative Political Action Conference should put it to rest. The suburban Washington gathering of the most conservative elements of the GOP last week featured speaker after speaker picking fights with other Republicans and offering criticisms — sometimes indirect and often direct — of party figures like Mitt Romney, Sen. John McCain, Karl Rove, former President George W. Bush and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Best venue for settling dispute
The Japan-China territorial row over the Senkaku (called Diaoyu in China) Islands looks like a brawl of a nationalistic group from one country against a nationalistic group from another country. But the number of people who have taken to the streets in Chinese cities shows that there are far more nationalistic and chauvinistic elements in China than in Japan.

Best tribute to those who died
I have to disagree strongly with the finishing sentiment of the March 18 editorial "Time for antinuclear protests." I feel that The Japan Times' antinuclear activism has overridden its common sense. The best tribute to those who lost their lives and livelihoods in the March 11, 2011, disaster would be to find out why such an advanced nation as Japan was unable to protect its citizens from a tsunami that could possibly have been predicted.
