Tips for springtime on the Shikoku pilgrimage route
Setsubun is over and it is officially springtime in Japan. So what if it's still cold — happy spring! And spring means cherry blossoms, a new school year and, of course, pilgrimaging! This spring, many people will set out on the pilgrimage of a lifetime as they walk, bicycle, bus or drive the Shikoku 88-temple route. I myself try to get down to Shikoku once a year to do a bit of holy hiking. It helps keep me balanced, and in shape.

Some thoughts on the rudiments of rutabaga
I can't wait to see NHK-G's special program to air Feb. 23. They are finally going to address a topic I have harbored secret thoughts about since I came to Japan in 1994. NHK is going to broach the topic in a no-holds-barred documentary. The subject is turnip tossing.

A howler for Tokyo's bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games
On Jan. 7, Tokyo put in its bid to host the 2020 summer Olympic Games. So did Madrid and Istanbul. Who wins the coveted bid will not be known until September. But consider some of the barriers to Tokyo winning. First, Tokyo needs to garner more public support, meaning they'll need to get the population collectively salivating at the chance to hold the games. Second, many people feel Japan should instead be committing itself to speeding up the lymphatic government cleanup and rebuilding of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami disaster area.

So many small things Japan should be proud of
The new Tokyo Skytree has enjoyed immense popularity and is being credited for giving Japanese people hope for the future. Yes, having with the tallest tower (634 meters) and the second tallest structure in the world, we are all filled with a renewed sense of confirmation that — taller is better!

How can Japan help save the world? Be more Taiwanese
Japan had Taiwan under its rule from 1895 until 1945. Despite the history of colonial rule, Taiwanese today have largely favorable views of the Japanese. Japan is the third most popular destination for the Taiwanese, after South Korea and China.

Mapping Japan — what on earth could be cooler than that?
According to a recent article in The Japan Times, more and more women are taking to map-reading these days. One reason cited in the article is the influence of the new autumn TV drama called "Sosa Chizu no Onna" ("Woman of Investigative Maps"). The starring role is played by Miki Maya, herself a map lover. So it appears that some women are discovering their closet investigative talents or at least their inner Sherlock Holmes.

Yaeyama stray cats steal the show on the beaches of Taketomi
After eight days on Miyakojima in which again our departure was delayed by bad weather, we finally set sail for Ishigaki Island, part of the Yaeyama Island chain and the end of our sailing trip through Japan.

Miyakojima — dolphins to the port side!
After four days of sightseeing on Okinawa Island, we set sail for Miyakojima, the next major island to the south in the Okinawan chain. Having just visited Okinawa's Churaumi Aquarium, I was more aware of the beautiful sea life underneath our sailboat such as manta rays, sea turtles and maybe even dugong. In addition, at the aquarium we had seen a dolphin show, never imagining it was a foreshadowing of what we would see in the open sea.

Okinawa — a different world with its own time zone
After waiting 10 days on Amami Oshima for Typhoon No. 21, it finally blew in. All week long, locals had dropped by our boat to inform us that it was not safe tied up where it was — at the guest berth at the sea station. But when we inquired where we could move it to, no one knew. We couldn't leave Amami Oshima until the typhoon passed, unless we risk getting caught in the middle of it. So we waited. And waited. Until finally, the typhoon came.

Time stands still on Amami Oshima
We had already been on Amami Oshima for a week waiting for Typhoon No. 21 to pass. But the typhoon was meandering around the Pacific like a drunken sailor, zigzagging a path north-west, once making a U-turn then righting itself, and another time its path taking a complete pirouette.

Yakushima to Amami Oshima: Pursued by Typhoon No. 21
Seasick and dehydrated, I was looking forward to our arrival on Yakushima, an island that is 90 percent forest, has 46 peaks at over 1,000 meters, and boasts more than 3,000 types of insects. I certainly needed a break after three days of looking at only sea from a 45 ft yacht pitching in 2.5-meter waves. Yes, greenery and solid land would be good for me.

Shiraishi to Yakushima: Nearly abducted by aliens
I don't remember whose idea it was to sail from Okayama in the Seto Inland Sea to Okinawa, Japan's southernmost islands, but here we are — seven friends in a 45 ft (13.7 meter) yacht named Sea Fox, sailing in 20-knot winds down the coast of Kyushu in the Pacific Ocean. All hands on deck!
