Construction on track as two-year mark approaches for 2020 Tokyo Olympics
Just 105 weeks away from the Opening Ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, the newly constructed venues are about 20~40 percent completed and just about on schedule, Tokyo Metropolitan Government officials insisted on Tuesday during a media tour for the venues in the Tokyo Bay Area.

In January, regional newspaper Fukushima Minpo interviewed Yosuke Takagi, state minister of economy, trade and industry. While talking about reconstruction plans for areas near the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, Takagi mentioned resurrecting Dash-mura (Dash Village), a farm created from scratch by boy band Tokio for its Nippon TV series "The Tetsuwan Dash."

Monuments to peace reveal island's violent history
With its perpetual flame for peace and slabs of granite inscribed with the names of the more than 241,000 people who died on all sides during the Battle of Okinawa, the Okinawa Peace Memorial Park in Mabuni is the island's most famous monument — but also one of its most controversial. Critics argue that it whitewashes responsibility for the war by listing the innocent dead alongside the soldiers who killed them; moreover, prefectural officials altered displays at the park's museum in 1999 to downplay atrocities committed against islanders by the Japanese military.

Treats galore in summertime Sapporo
I barely recognize Sapporo's Odori Park clothed in its summer coat of flowers. The last time I journeyed north to Hokkaido, this dozen-block strip of land running straight as a die through the middle of its capital city was sporting massive artistic creations fashioned for the annual Yuki Matsuri (Snow Festival). That February, the lush greenery, the beds of marigolds and the elegant rose garden — which in summer marks the park's western end — were all under meters of snow. So it's nice to see the city without shivering my way through it.
