The prospect of an afternoon of relaxation in the company of fluffy, purring friends has earned cat cafes a top spot on the itineraries of visitors to Japan, but not all operators have the interests of their feline employees in mind, animal experts warn.

Cat cafes in Japan to be allowed to open until 10 p.m.
The Environment Ministry plans to permanently allow cat cafes to stay open until 10 p.m. from June, extending a temporary measure after finding the later hours make little difference to the animals' stress, ministry officials said Wednesday.

Tama, a cat "stationmaster" of a railway station in Wakayama Prefecture whose immense popularity helped boost the railway's revenues and the local sightseeing industry, died Monday at a local animal hospital aged 16 years and two months, the equivalent of about 80 years in human age, the railway said Wednesday.
