Studio Ghibli inspires endless adaptations
As one of the most important and acclaimed animation studios in not only Japan but the world, it's unsurprising that Studio Ghibli has also inspired a wealth of printed material. Helen McCarthy's "Hayao Miyazaki: Master of Japanese Animation" about the studio's most celebrated director and Miyazaki's own "Starting Point: 1979-1996" essay collection, as well as numerous art books, provide fascinating insights into the workings of the studio and its creative staff, but what about those just looking to sit down with a good story?

Live-action Ghibli remake delivers a new Kiki
When is a remake not a remake? Arguably, Takashi Shimizu's "Majo no Takkyubin (Kiki's Delivery Service)" is less a reworking of the Hayao Miyazaki animation classic (which this reviewer praised on this page in 1989) than his own interpretation of the 1985 Eiko Kadono fantasy novel on which the Miyazaki film is also based. (Encouraged by the novel's success, Kadono later wrote five more in a series.)

Mark Schilling's 2013 Top 10: Farewell to Ghibli's anime masters
Japanese films did quite well both commercially and critically in 2013, with Hayao Miyazaki's final feature animation, "Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises)," thumping the Hollywood competition at the local box office. But the industry's over-reliance on sure-thing manga, TV shows and novels for source material has put a damper on its creativity, while abroad the demand for quirky, violent films from Japan is still strong. Often lost in the cracks are good indie films that try to tell original stories about actual human beings.

Second opinion: Our Top 3 films in cross-review
Regular JT film critics Mark Schilling, Kaori Shoji and Giovanni Fazio got together at the Uplink theater/restaurant in Shibuya to talk about each other's No. 1 films for 2013: "Cloud Atlas" (Fazio), "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" (Shoji) and "Kaguya-hime no Monogatari (The Tale of Princess Kaguya)" (Schilling). The discussion was heated, but no crockery was thrown.

Get lost in Inokashira Park and find yourself in Ghibli
Ah, Kichijoji: my favorite Tokyo neighborhood. Less than 30 minutes from the heart of the city, this hip suburb has everything a downtown dweller would want: good restaurants, good shopping, a thriving music scene and one of the coolest parks in the Kanto region. Indeed, most of my friends who live there tend to stick around, rarely venturing into the metropolis. When you have everything you need within biking distance, why hop on a train?

Chill out in Nagano's hot water
In Hayao Miyazaki's Oscar-winning fantasy "Spirited Away," the main character, Chihiro, survives by working at a sento (bathhouse) bathing spirits. The sento is depicted as a wooden structure several floors high and as a lively, hectic place where creatures take care of the guests, including a stink spirit who drives all of the other visitors out when he arrives for a bath.

Is Hayao Miyazaki Japan's greatest film director?
How great is Hayao Miyazaki? Domestically, three of his movies are among the top five money-earners: His "Spirited Away" from 2001 outstrips even "Titanic" and "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." Globally, his movies are the darlings of international film festivals. "Spirited Away" took the Golden Bear Prize, the highest award at the Berlin International Film Festival, in 2002, making it the first and only animated film to take the top honors.
