A child's dream day: lunch, ice-cream and fun at the park
When cooler weather is upon us, my daughter and I like to venture to neighborhood parks to spend some time outdoors. Since I like to eat out and she likes to play, I have found that one of the keys to a peaceful meal with kids in tow is finding a restaurant with somewhere nearby for them to run around first before daring to sit down at a table.

Ben & Jerry's may have cooked up their best ice cream pun yet
Ben & Jerry's ice cream-flavor puns have always been top-notch ("Cherry Garcia" is a prime example), but its latest Japan-only flavor takes things to a new level.

Donuts and ice cream united at last at Krispy Kreme
Two of life's greatest comfort foods — donuts and ice cream — come together at Krispy Kreme stores across the country, where you can top your warm honey-glazed donut with two scoops of vanilla ice cream and extra toppings, adding more calories to an already overly decadent dessert.

One Happy Turn snack deserves another (this time with ice cream)
While it is sad that the summer weather is more or less behind us, Meiji's latest product, Happy Turn Ice (¥130 plus tax) — an unlikely appropriation of its hugely popular Happy Turn rice crackers — is a good cause for cheer. Meiji mixes in the savory "Happy Powder" used to coat its rice crackers into plain ice cream. While the dessert could be improved with chunks of rice cracker added in, as you'd expect from the tie-up, the combination of saltiness and sweetness is a pleasant new experience for the taste buds.

Refuel and refresh at Japan's gourmet motoring rest stops
Whoever said it's better to travel than to arrive must have been traveling in Japan. Just ask the folks who hit the road earlier this month for the o-Bon summer holidays. Sure, the nightly newscasts were filled with horror stories of bumper-to-bumper traffic, but motorists and their families knew that relief lay as close as the next rest area, where they could refuel, refresh — and finally let the kids out of the car.

Vegetable ice cream — not as awful as it sounds
Frozen vegetables usually bring to mind prepackaged frozen chunks of carrot and broccoli meant to be heated up and served with chicken or steak. Haagen-Dazs, though, proved that image wrong with the release of carrot- and tomato-flavored ice creams (¥284) last week. Cherry and orange flavors mask the vegetable taste, so you don't feel like you're eating frozen tomato soup. Even moms may be able to convince their veggie-hating kids to eat it, though I wouldn't group it with the vegetables on the food pyramid.

Scoop up a Ben & Jerry's at Kanto supermarkets
No more waiting in long lines at the Ben & Jerry's shops in Tokyo this summer — six flavors of the ice cream can now be found in branches of upscale supermarkets such as Seijo Ishii and Nissin World Delicatessen, some branches of Tsutaya and so on. You can try the popular Cherry Garcia or satisfy your chocolate craving with Chocolate Fudge Brownie anytime you want, priced ¥348 for a 120-ml cup. And good news for those who live in Chiba, Kanagawa and Ibaraki: You can also pick up Ben & Jerry's without having to make the long trek into Tokyo. A list of the 120 outlets, which will be updated as new stores are added, can be viewed online at reizoko.benjerry.jp/shoplist.html.

Chocolate gelato at its most intense
Who eats chocolate in summer? Very few people who I know. It's not just that chocolate bars melt in seconds: The taste can seem too heavy and the texture too cloying. It simply doesn't seem to suit Japan's muggy heat. But there's one exception to that rule I'll gladly and frequently make — when the chocolate comes in gelato form.
