Accept getting ID'd or get out

Regarding the recent complaints about Japan's plan to photograph and fingerprint all arriving foreign visitors from Nov. 20: When the U.S. government forced open the harbors of Japan in the 1850s under the poorly veiled threat of war, we had the same attitude -- our rights.

'Mad Max' loose on the streets of Tokyo

KITT, the talking Pontiac Trans Am in David Hasselhoff's "Knight Rider" TV series, doesn't get a mention. Steve McQueen's Mustang from the movie "Bullit" barely rates a response. And what about all those Aston Martins that James Bond drove? Not a whisper. Confessed car nut Yoshinao Hirata of Chofu, in...

In the fall of 2003, the boy band TOKIO embarked from Tokyo on a journey to cover the entire coastline of Japan in a 1997 Daihatsu Hijet minivan that they had refit themselves with a solar roof-panel and a battery-powered engine. Three relationships the U.S. must tend to

LOS ANGELES — Three of the largest pieces in the sprawling jigsaw puzzle known as Asia are, of course, China, India and Japan. The first is the most populous country on Earth, the second is the most populous democracy and the third is the world's second-biggest economy — and (theoretically) chief...

Bizarre offer to quit

Mr. Ichiro Ozawa's announcement of his offer to resign as head of the Democratic Party of Japan, which controls the Upper House together with other opposition forces, was too abrupt and bizarre. His behavior was irresponsible, especially in light of his party's strength in the Upper House. He had the...

Seeing World Series at Fenway Park an amazing experience

I have been to a major league All-Star Game (Seattle Kingdome, 1979) and seen big league action at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, the Polo Grounds and Yankee Stadium in New York and Wrigley Field in Chicago. But, until two weeks ago, there were still three ambitions to fulfill for me as a baseball fan.

The joys of being 'one with nature'

While the other six people on board were sleeping down in the cabins, I was sleeping outside on the deck under the canopy in the cockpit of the boat. For Japanese women — any woman for that matter — Richard D. Cabrera is a sight for sore eyes. Here in Japan especially he would appear to have all the requisite credentials that make girls swoon: kakkoii (trendy or cool), kanemochi (wealthy), and kashikoi (smart).
