Hakuho notches another, while Kaio once again raises eyebrows

With the presentation of the Emperor's Cup to yokozuna Hakuho on Sunday evening Nov. 29, the first decade of sumo in the 21st century came to a thundering close. Hakuho (15-0) had just dispatched fellow yokozuna Asashoryu with a wonderful uwatenage throwing technique to claim his 12th top-flight trophy...

Is Bangladesh's paralyzing feud over at last?

LONDON — If a Shakespeare should ever arise in Bangladesh, he would have plenty of tragedies around which to weave his history plays. The country is only 38 years old, but the vendettas among leading families have been just as tangled and bloody as the ones in 14th- and 15th- century England that gave...

Nice scientific change of pace

I found Jeff Ogrisseg's "Our growing Earth?" (and related articles) on Nov. 22 particularly interesting as they presented a theory largely discredited by mainstream science — due to the natural bias of the scientific community — despite the fact that the theory explains a number of existing phenomena...

Interesting but fallacious theory

I am glad to see that The Japan Times is publishing in-depth articles on scientific topics such as the "Our growing Earth?" series on geology by Jeff Ogrisseg. But these articles prompt a reminder of an all too common logical fallacy: "Albert Einstein got bad grades in school. I am getting bad grades....

Society's whiskies hit the high notes

I've found a new whisky to love. It's a 26-year-old single malt from Hokkaido's Yoichi distillery. It's got oak and a gentle, sweet smokiness, a touch of leather, cherries, toasted almonds and I'm just making this up now, because after "oaky" and "a bit smoky," I ran out of vocabulary.
