Meeting a friend in 1982 who had just returned from a working holiday in Japan (Australia and Japan were the first two countries to have such an agreement and it started in 1980). This sounded like fun, so I decided to see Japan for myself.
To help Japan internationalize and make it a better country for my five kids, who are all half Japanese. Japan is a wonderful country, but its citizens can lead harsh lives. I'd like to help make their lives more fulfilling and inspirational.
Starting the Daijob website. Prior to this, many Japanese had only one chance to choose an employer; when they graduated, then they’d be locked into the same company for the rest of their lives. Daijob was Japan’s first mid-career job site and hugely impacted social values. Now, the average Japanese aged 30 has switched jobs three times. So Daijob.com has given people more choice and control over their careers.
To continue working for change, internationalization, making people’s lives better. I plan to do this by giving people the tools to control their own lives, and by bringing new ways of working and making income. In particular I think tourism is a key part of this, and that's why I now run the Japan Travel website. I want to help revitalize the countryside regions of Japan.
As non-Japanese, and especially if we look different, we will never be regular members of society. That's OK, though, because it doesn’t stop you from being outstanding and leading change. Essentially you're an actor on a stage. Be brave, be fair, be committed, be open to others.
