747s "Zampano"
The debut album by the U.K.'s 747s is a grower, not a shower. Although it starts brightly with "Night & Day" -- strangely reminiscent of early 1990s Paul Westerberg -- the excellently produced "Zampano" doesn't really scream for attention immediately. Instead it sets off on a series of songs that channel Supergrass without the edge ("Miles Away" and "Nature's Alibi") or The Beatles through the prism of Andy Partridge's XTC. But as the slower second half takes over, it becomes apparent that "Zampano" is the kind of album to fill in the time between when you are listening to bands that require more concentration -- whether it be because they have you jumping up and down or because you are working out if you like what they're trying. 747s have been opening for Arctic Monkeys so they have some heavy supporters. If they amp up their own sound on their next outing, they'll be on to something.

An art market in the making
When Fukusaburo Maeda and his wife Sohaku Yamashita founded the Nihon International Contemporary Art Festival (NICAF) in 1992, they were hoping to invigorate Japan's contemporary art scene. Perhaps they were ahead of their times, though, because while people were ready to come look at what was on show, they weren't ready to buy.

Third point of Roppongi
With the opening of Tokyo Midtown on Friday, the Art Triangle Roppongi concept is now complete. Comprised of the Mori Art Museum, the new National Art Center (NAC) and the elegant new Suntory Museum of Art -- part of the Midtown project -- the idea of a new precinct for art in Tokyo is ready to be tested.

New show offers breakthrough installation
About a month ago at Tokyo's Shugoarts, photographer Yasumasa Morimura gave a performance in which he coopted the speech author Yukio Mishima gave from the balcony of the Self-Defense Force headquarters in Tokyo in 1970 before committing ritual seppuku inside the building. In his performance, Morimura repurposed Mishima's manifesto as a call for Japanese artists to return to Japanese culture.

Bring on the backlash say Arctic Monkeys
It must be difficult to carry the weight of the rock world's expectations on your shoulders, but Sheffield, England's Arctic Monkey's held up well Tuesday night at Studio Coast in eastern Tokyo. Giving Japan a quick preview tour in advance of their headline performances this summer at Summer Sonic, the band blitzed through their debut album and a couple new tunes in just over 60 minutes.

'Drawing Restraint 9': Matthew Barney's latest film stands on ceremony
There is a scene near the end of Matthew Barney's new movie "Drawing Restraint 9" where your greatest fears about the film come true. And no, it isn't a typical moment of blood-saturated transformation as in his "Cremaster Series" -- it's actually before the knives come out.

Give them what they want
When Paul Baron moved to Tokyo three years ago, he was excited to explore the city's vast art world as he had been an avid follower of art events while studying graphic design in London. There was only one problem: Where to find out what was going on. It should have been easy; it should have all been online. It wasn't.

Photos take on a life all of their own
When you enter "Frei schwimmer," the Wolfgang Tillmans exhibition currently at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery (TOC), one of the first things you notice is that the photographs on display are attached to the walls with tape or paper clips.

When trying to trace your lineage in Japan, the "koseki" is the most important form of document you'll encounter.
