The debut album by the U.K.'s 747s is a grower, not a shower. Although it starts brightly with "Night & Day" -- strangely reminiscent of early 1990s Paul Westerberg -- the excellently produced "Zampano" doesn't really scream for attention immediately. Instead it sets off on a series of songs that channel Supergrass without the edge ("Miles Away" and "Nature's Alibi") or The Beatles through the prism of Andy Partridge's XTC. But as the slower second half takes over, it becomes apparent that "Zampano" is the kind of album to fill in the time between when you are listening to bands that require more concentration -- whether it be because they have you jumping up and down or because you are working out if you like what they're trying. 747s have been opening for Arctic Monkeys so they have some heavy supporters. If they amp up their own sound on their next outing, they'll be on to something.
