'The Wrecking Crew' played the American soundtrack to the 1960s
The 2002 film "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" is a documentary about The Funk Brothers, an anonymous band of studio session musicians that defined the sound of classic 1960s soul music. Now we have "The Wrecking Crew," a documentary about the West Coast equivalent, who played on just about every non-Motown track you hear on "oldies" AM radio stations.

White people on holiday are threatened by Asian stereotypes in 'No Escape'
In this globalized age, Hollywood studios can no longer afford to trample over local sensibilities. Earlier this year it was revealed that an upcoming thriller about an American family caught in a Southeast Asian revolution would be having its title changed from "The Coup" to the less provocative "No Escape."

'Love & Mercy' is a biopic worthy of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys
Real surfers don't listen to The Beach Boys. That's one of the first things I learned while hanging out at the ocean toting a surfboard, and it's also one of the lines from "Love and Mercy," a biopic about The Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson. Along with his brothers, Dennis and Carl, and their cousin Mike Love, Brian's meteoric rise to stardom came at about the same time he started arguing with Mike about musical direction.

The mysterious appeal of bras, cleavage and singing teenagers in 'Pitch Perfect'
'Pitch Perfect" is a lively, likable movie. I'm not saying that out of a fear of sounding like a curmudgeonly granny who has to Google "peach slapped" to know what it means — but there's always that risk.

Thomas Pynchon meets The Dude in 'Inherent Vice'
"Inherent vice," a term used in marine insurance law, means anything you can't avoid: chocolate will melt, glass will shatter and fruit will spoil. For "Inherent Vice" the movie, the thing that can't be avoided is a comparison to "The Big Lebowski."

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb
It isn't the greatest of franchises but that doesn't make it any easier to say goodbye to "Night at the Museum." The third and final installment, "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb," of the zany, entertainment-for-all vehicle also marks the last screen appearance of Robin Williams, who died last year.

Great War cost Europe a century
There was absolutely nothing noble about U.S. President Woodrow Wilson's intervention in Europe during the carnage of 1917. It led to a peace of vengeful victors, triumphant nationalists and avaricious imperialists — when the war would have otherwise ended in a bedraggled peace of mutually exhausted bankruptcies and discredited war parties.

The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet: 'He may be a blonde American boy but he has the soul of a self-effacing Zen monk'
In "The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet," the running-away letter 10-year-old T.S. Spivet (Kyle Catlett) leaves for his parents has got to be one of the most moving epistles in cinema history. Brimming with modesty, formal but warmly polite, it could have been written by a nice Japanese son. "I have gone for a while to do some work," is the opening sentence, and the letter ends: "You are one of the best families in the world."

Londoner Nick Wilson took part in one of the early editions of the Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) in Cape Town in 2003. The Japan Times figures he's the perfect person to give us an appraisal of the academy's evolution over the past decade.

SDF principle in South Sudan
The government on Tuesday announced a plan to send several hundred Ground Self-Defense Force engineers to South Sudan next year as part of a U.N. peacekeeping operation. The GSDF has started procuring materials and equipment for its mission in South Sudan, which became Africa's 54th independent country in July, seceding from Sudan after many years of civil war. It is hoped that the GSDF will contribute to the improvement of infrastructure, which the country badly needs.
