The tortured artist is not just a cliche
Sai Hashizume's latest exhibition of precision realist painting, "This Isn't Happiness," is about updating some of the masters of Western art history. In her five new works, she deals prominently with the surrealist Rene Magritte and Vincent Van Gogh. She also adopts the ominous chiaroscuro of 17th-century Baroque painting, as well as some often darkly symbolic references from 17th-century Dutch still-life painting. Her themes are known, but remain enigmatic. As the title of the exhibition indicates, they are not altogether rosy.

'Tale of Tales': Do we need fables for adults?
The current ideological system that governs our lives — call it late capitalism, the spectacle, or just Babylon — is most devious in its ability to take any and all resistance, any deviance from the hamster wheel of consumerism, and repackage it as just another product, whether that's Che Guevara T-shirts, "fair-trade" coffee at Starbucks, or The Beatles' "Revolution" as a soundtrack for Nike ads.

Animated antidotes to Pixar-Disney eye candy
Children's animated films, like just about everything else these days, are mostly created by a couple of mega-corporations. Some days it seems like the only animations out there are digitally rendered, hyperactive "Pix-ney" flicks filled with pop-culture wisecracks and supported by a $100 million budget. There are plenty of fun films that fall within that category, but parents who think their kids deserve variety in their cinematic diet will be pleased to find there are other options this summer.

Blood & Guts
"Blood & Guts" by Australian journalist Sam Vincent is a behind-the-scenes investigation into whaling and a tale of two countries. Australia is on one side, united in its love of whales and its condemnation of Japan, which has refused to stop killing whales in the Antarctic despite (or perhaps in spite of) global and legal condemnation. Add in the "divine actions" of animal rights activists and it makes for a great story. If only the story were that straightforward.

A more potent beauty, a more complex beast
Some people under 40 are likely to think "Beauty and the Beast" is a classic story created by Disney in 1991. But that animated movie, which has enthralled millions of little girls and boys (and many of their parents, too), was actually based on a hefty novel by France's Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve published in 1740 as "La Belle et la Bete." In France, it was a best-seller of the Harlequin Romance variety: a sexy, dark love story conducted in a secret castle, tucked away in an enchanted forest. Apparently, it became quite the thing among the elite ladies and gentlemen of France to dress for masquerade balls as Belle or Bete (the Beast) — perhaps to spice things up in the romance department.

Tonnerre: 'Being nice is one way to get a girl, but it's not enough to keep her'
What do you do when you're a has-been musician with thinning hair, staring at middle age and years of loneliness ahead? The good news — at least for Maxime (Vincent Macaigne) in "Tonnerre" — is that you've got a kind old dad (Bernard Menez), a dog and a rambling house in the titular French city, surrounded by snowy mountains.
