Japan's rising sports stars look to raise the bar at Tokyo 2020 Olympics
Setting new records, Japan's Olympians managed to haul in a very respectable 38 medals at the 2012 London Games and 41 last year in Rio de Janeiro. Their efforts are certainly something for the nation's up-and-coming young athletes to duplicate or even surpass, as there are many potential stars out there who could become household names by the time Tokyo hosts the Olympics about 3u00bd years from now.

Super flyweight Inoue retains world title with sixth-round TKO of Kono

Inoue, Kono to meet for super flyweight title
WBO super flyweight champion Naoya Inoue will try to defend his belt for a fourth time when he faces compatriot and former world champion Kohei Kono, on Dec. 30 at Ariake Colosseum, the Ohashi gym announced on Wednesday. The gym also revealed IBF light flyweight title holder Akira Yaegashi and Inoue's younger brother, Takuma, will also take the ring the same day.

Tokyo Design Week: The professionals
Tokyo Design Week (TDW) seemed a little pared down this year, with a notable absence of a handicrafts creators' fair and only one awards exhibition. Nevertheless, it still offered the familiar lineup of products, interactive installations, architectural models, artworks and robots, as well as a new outdoor "air-tent" display of giant transparent inflatable spheres, many of them comprising collaborations between universities and big-name designers.

Crimes that imperil Japan's safe image
On July 22, The Japan Times ran an article with the headline, "Crime set to hit postwar low this year, first-half data shows." In it, the National Police Agency reported that the number of criminal offenses is on track to fall below 1 million for the first time since World War II ended, down from the all-time high of 2,853,739 cases in 2002. Crimes in the January-June period are down by 9.3 percent compared with the same period last year, with only "intellectual" crimes such as fraud and card forgery increasing, by 5.1 percent.
