Concert review: Culture Club winds back the years with a well-executed, albeit slightly surreal, performance
Culture Club's first Tokyo appearance in more than a decade on Tuesday seemed immaculately planned and slightly surreal. It was almost as if the popular English band had never left the live scene at all, only briefly disappearing before reappearing with upgrades.

Forget clubbing: Outdoor festivals offer a natural alternative
When the revised adult entertainment business law comes into effect on June 23, bringing an end to Japan's archaic ban on all-night dance parties, it will mark the end of what has been a challenging period for the nation's nightclubs. But beyond the major metropolises, at campsites and off-season ski resorts, a parallel dance scene has been quietly thriving, untroubled by the so-called fueihō law.

You don't know what you've got (till it's gone) in Tokyo's nagaya
After hearing rumors that one of my favorite hideaways in Tokyo, the Sanuki Club, is slated for demolition, I stand outside the hotel's front gates with apprehension. Aside from offering some of the cheapest lodgings available in Minato Ward, the property's beer and barbecue terrace — tucked under mature trees and backed by Japanese garden landscaping — as well as its historical wooden buildings, mini bamboo grove, and a stylishly unconventional modern lobby, have long delighted its intellectual and artistic clientele. I'll be crushed if it has closed.

With new venues such as Contact and Sankeys opening their doors in Tokyo this spring, there is hope for a resurgence in the underground electronic music circuit in 2016. But with a glut of EDM mega-bashes, the festival scene for mature dance music fans can sometimes look a bit bleak.

Omake Club helps Zombie-Chang escape down her own artistic rabbit hole
Midway through our conversation at a dimly lit Shibuya cafe, Meirin Yung offers to break down any song on her recently released album under the name Zombie-Chang. I choose the slacker-inspired "Semete Kanashii Tokiniwa" (loosely translated as "At Least in Sad Times") that served as the advance preview of her second full-length release, "Zombie-Change."
