So much to soak up in Yamagata
OK, let me put this out there: Yamagata-ken, just like any sensible prefecture in Japan, loves tourists. But you get the feeling that Yamagata Prefecture Tourist Division tries a little harder to promote its treasures. They even occasionally invite journalists up for a spin around the countryside.

The Horai in Atami: A reputation so good it's true
The pride of Horai is Hashiri no Yu, an outdoor bath reached via a steep lantern-lit path. While the maid prepared our room for dinner, we soaked in the waters of the onsen, watching the island hills change from misty gray through pink, blue and purple to black, as the sun set over the bay.
