Nuclear disaster drill aims for more realism

Kagoshima to fly 300 to Shanghai to aid Chinese airline
The Kagoshima Prefectural Assembly has approved a ¥34 million plan to send 300 local government employees, teachers and citizens on trips to Shanghai to help maintain a struggling air route served by a Chinese airline.

Responding to criticism over wasteful spending, Kagoshima Gov. Yuichiro Ito said Wednesday he would include about 300 prefectural residents in his plan to dispatch 1,000 officials to Shanghai for training for the sake of maintaining the city of Kagoshima's Shanghai flight route, which has seen a large decline in passengers.

Dinosaur tooth unearthed on Kagoshima isle
City officials of Satsumasendai in Kagoshima Prefecture announced this week that a piece of fossilized tooth believed to be that of a herbivorous dinosaur under the Ceratopsidae species has been unearthed from 80-million-year-old strata on Shimokoshiki Island in the city.

Impossible forests where tides ebb and flow
A ripple flows gently inland across an expanse of dark-gray mud. It washes in, then drains back, dampening the surface; it briefly fills, then empties from, tiny holes made by innumerable small crabs. The ebb is over, and the flow tide has begun.
