A signature mystery; "Last Hope"; CM of the week: Mister Donut
The new Fuji TV drama series, "Biburia Koshodo no Jiken Techo" ("Biblia Antique Book Shop Case Notebook"; Mon., 9 p.m.) is based on a series of "light mystery novels," meaning stories where no one is killed. Ayame Goriki plays Shioriko, who runs the titular store located in an alley near Kita Kamakura Station. Shioriko is asocial and eccentric, but she knows more about antique books than anyone.

Ueto stars as ex-con in NHK drama; a Japanese spin on "The Brothers Karamazov"; CM of the week: Parco
Strange casting decisions are often explained by advertising prerogatives, so we're not sure what prompted NHK to cast Aya Ueto against type to play an ex-con in the 10-part drama "Itsuka Hi no Ataru Basho de" ("In a Place Where the Sun Sometimes Shines"; NHK-G, Tues., 10 p.m.).

Misogura Tamayura: Welcome the new year with a taste of tradition
Tradition rules at this time of year, and few parts of Tokyo are more traditional than the grid of narrow streets to the south of Ueno's Shinobazu Pond. Although many of the buildings in this former geisha district have seen much better days, there are still gems to be found — and Misogura Tamayura is one of the best.

NHK spotlights gunslinging daughter of the north in yearlong Sunday drama
How to rebuild when you've lost everything? In the immediate aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, as many thousands of people in northeastern Japan sought to answer that question for themselves, public broadcaster NHK began looking for a historical figure whose story might provide some inspiration — someone whose life it could depict in the 2013 edition of its yearlong Sunday-evening taiga drama series.

Club crowd uses salsa to slam archaic law
Earlier this month, several people were seen salsa dancing in frigid weather outside bustling Shibuya Station. They weren't there to show off, but to protest what they say is an outdated law that is being used to indiscriminately crack down on their favorite dancing spots.

Boy band Arashi has been getting a lot of work recently from NHK. In addition to their second consecutive hosting gig for the year-end song contest, they've been tapped to navigate "Asu ni Kakeru Tabi" ("Travels Building a Bridge to Tomorrow") a series of five programs, three of which air this week (Mon.-Wed., 10 p.m.), that look at "ideas that point to a bright future for Japan."

Celebrity couples are very popular among variety-show producers, but in recent years they have shown more interest in another two-for-one bargain: the parent-child pairing. Terrorists and prison breaks; "Secrets of Prefectural Residents"; CM of the week: Family Mart
Criminality is the theme of this week's two-hour special edition of "Jitsuroku Sekai no Mystery" ("True Accounts of World Mysteries"; TV Tokyo, Mon., 9 p.m.). The main segment recounts a terrorist incident. On Dec. 11, 1994, Philippine Airlines Flight 434 was en route from Cebu to Narita when a bomb exploded, killing one Japanese man and injuring 10 others. The pilot was able to land the aircraft safely. The device had been planted by a famous international terrorist traveling under a false name who had been on the previous leg of the flight.

A Chinese man suspected of an arson attack last December on Yasukuni Shrine says he was motivated by "antihumanitarian acts by the militaristic Japan," according to Yonhap news agency.

Another suit filed to halt reactors at Kepco's over Oi nuclear plant
A lawsuit was filed Friday by 154 people in Fukui and other prefectures seeking to shut down the only nuclear reactors now in operation in Japan, at Kansai Electric Power Co.'s power plant in Oi, Fukui Prefecture, contending Kepco had the two units restarted before their safety was guaranteed.

In the studio these rankings are discussed by students along with guest celebrities and the host, Tatsuya Yamaguchi of Tokio.
