Police probing suicide victim find his parents slain in their Saitama home
Police investigating the apparent suicide of a 30-year-old man who was hit by a Tobu Isesaki Line train at around 8:30 a.m. Sunday found the victim's parents dead in their home in Kasukabe, Saitama Prefecture, when they went to the house around noon.

The Libyan 'wedge' in NATO
The desire to "do something" about the situation in Libya drove the United Nations Security Council to authorize use of all possible measures — diplomatic language for military force — to protect civilian populations in that troubled country. The consensus behind that vote quickly evaporated as Russia and China, holders of permanent seats and vetoes on the Security Council and which abstained on the decision, criticized actions to give the measure teeth. That development should not come as a surprise.

Flash card learning has its limits
As an educator working hard to overcome the misplaced faith in rote memorization that has long hampered Japan's ability to effectively learn English, I was extremely disappointed to read Koichi Ko's July 29 article, " Web-based flash cards will dazzle language learners."
