DJ Krush taps into tradition for RBMA
This month, artists from 34 countries will congregate in Tokyo for the latest edition of the Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA), a caffeine-fueled creative hothouse organized by the world's most ubiquitous energy drink brand. For participants, the event offers a chance to attend closed-door lectures with a host of well-known musicians and DJs, and to collaborate with each other at a newly built studio complex in Shibuya.

Simi Lab delivers a mixed message on 'Page 2: Mind Over Matter'
Few genres are as freighted with the politics of authenticity as hip-hop. Just last month, the New Yorker kicked off a fresh round of controversy when it ran a profile of Lord Jamar, a cantankerous middle-aged rapper who rails against what he sees as the softening — and whitening — of modern hip-hop. In between lambasting Le1f's sexuality and Kanye West's stylistic and sartorial liberties, Jamar took aim at artists like the white rapper Macklemore: "You are guests in the house of hip-hop. . . . Keep it real with yourselves: you know this is a black man's thing."

“Hip-hop in Palestine?” the director of the 2008 film “Slingshots Hip Hop” recalls saying to herself when she first learned from a U.S. radio program in 2001 that there was a Palestinian hip-hop group called DAM.

Early quake relief project 'Nihon Kizuna' to hold two-year anniversary event
Laurent Fintoni was visiting Japan in March 2011 when the Great East Japan Earthquake struck. The 33-year-old writer and DJ quickly contacted friends in the music scene here and abroad to produce "Nihon Kizuna," one of the first albums to aid disaster relief.
