Futenma base to stay if replacement plan fails: U.S. expert
A U.S. expert on Japan has warned that U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Ginowan, Okinawa, will remain as is if no replacement base is built in the prefecture in line with a plan agreed upon by Washington and Tokyo, an expert said Wednesday.

Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera will visit Okinawa next week to brief Okinawa Gov. Hirokazu Nakaima on measures to reduce the heavy concentration of U.S. military bases in Japan, government sources said Friday.

U.S. Futenma base relocation hits new stumbling block: dugongs
Dugongs, an endangered marine species, in 2012 were inhabiting the reclamation site in Okinawa chosen for the relocation of the U.S. Futenma base, the first time their presence has been confirmed there in three years, a survey by the Okinawa Defense Bureau revealed Saturday.
