Artists, athletes will get to shine at Sports Culture Davos in 2016
As Japan gears up to host the 2020 Summer Olympics, the government will jointly hold Sports Culture Davos in fall 2016 in Tokyo and in the Kansai region with the Geneva-based World Economic Forum, education minister Hakubun Shimomura said.

Blazing a trail for Japanese sake in China
Masato Nakatani is the sixth-generation head of Nakatani Brewing Co. in Nara Prefecture, and one of the most outstanding figures involved in developing the worldwide sake market. Nineteen years ago, Nakatani began brewing sake in Tianjin, China, and the high-quality "Asaka" sake enjoys nearly the top share of China's sake market. As a representative example of sake, Asaka will be served at the Japan Night event, part of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting of New Champions to be held from Sept. 10 to 12 in Tianjin, China.

An international forum for women that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe dubs "women's Davos forum" will be held in Tokyo and its surrounding region between Sept. 12 and 14, featuring such female leaders as International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde, government officials said Tuesday.

Abe's culture wars boomerang against Japan

The Financial Times is right to warn that the jingoism of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and attempts to stifle public debate, are grave threats to Japan's open society.
