Tokyo's best art-house cinema reopens with Robert Altman documentary
When Yebisu Garden Place opened for business in Tokyo in 1994 you could walk through its marionette clock square, pass under a glass arch and find the best art-house theater in Tokyo — Ebisu Garden Cinema — tucked away beside a faux chateau. The debut film it screened was Robert Altman's masterpiece "Short Cuts," the first of many great films to be shown there.

'Timbuktu' director wants more cinema from West Africa

DLE, Toho to use theater screens as testing ground for new characters

Revisiting the works of director Takashi Miike
Takashi Miike is one of the few Japanese filmmakers now working, Takeshi Kitano and Hayao Miyazaki being two others, who enjoy a measure of recognition outside Japan's insular film world. Though hardly a household name in Kansas, Miike has long been a favorite with the international Asian Extreme Cinema crowd, who first loved him for his bad-boy violence and black-comic weirdness: The bodyguard with the dart-shooting vagina in "Fudoh: The New Generation" (1997), the psychotic former dancer who saws off her middle-aged lover's foot in "Audition" (1999) or the dancing corpses in "The Happiness of the Katakuris" (2001).

Writer Donald Richie dies at 88
Long-term Japan resident, writer and critic Donald Richie, who through dozens of books and articles published from the late 1940s until the last decade helped introduce Japanese film and culture to the world, passed away in Tokyo on Tuesday, according to his long-term editor, Leza Lowitz. He was 88.
